Delta waves
Last updated June 2026
Delta waves are the slowest, highest-amplitude rhythms your brain produces — the signature of deep, dreamless sleep and the body's overnight repair shift.
What are delta waves?
Delta waves (0.5–4 Hz) are the slowest and highest-amplitude brainwaves, dominant during deep, dreamless NREM sleep. This is when the body does most of its physical repair — tissue growth, immune strengthening — and when the brain consolidates memory and clears metabolic waste. Entraining toward delta can help you fall into deep sleep faster.
Because they sit at the very bottom of the frequency spectrum, delta waves are the marker clinicians look for when measuring sleep depth. The more time you spend in delta-dominant slow-wave sleep, the more restorative the night tends to feel.
What delta feels like
You don't consciously experience delta — by definition it dominates when you're deeply asleep and unaware. What you notice is the morning after: waking genuinely rested, physically recovered, and clear-headed. The aim of delta entrainment is to ease you across the threshold into that state and help you hold it.
How to use delta entrainment
There are two ways to deliver an entrainment signal. Binaural beats play a slightly different frequency in each ear and need stereo headphones to work — not always comfortable for sleep. Isochronic tones pulse a single tone on and off and work on any speaker, Bluetooth, or AirPlay device, which makes them the practical choice for an overnight session.
In Entrain, pick a delta preset from the Sleep collection, set a sleep timer, and let the audio fade as you drift off. Start at a gentle volume and let the rhythm do the work.
- Fall asleep faster
- Physical recovery & repair
- Deep, restorative rest
For sleep, lean on isochronic tones over speakers so you're not lying on headphones, and always set a sleep timer. Keep the volume low — the signal works at a whisper, and quieter audio is less likely to wake you later in the night.

Frequently asked
What are delta waves best for?
Delta waves are tied to deep, dreamless NREM sleep — the stage where the body does most of its physical repair and the brain consolidates memory and clears metabolic waste. Delta entrainment is typically used to help you fall into deep sleep faster and rest more restoratively.
Can I use delta entrainment with speakers instead of headphones?
Yes. Binaural beats need stereo headphones because they rely on a slightly different frequency in each ear. Isochronic tones pulse a single tone on and off, so they work on any speaker, Bluetooth, or AirPlay device — handy for an overnight sleep session.
Is it safe to fall asleep with delta entrainment playing?
For most people it's a low-risk, drug-free aid. Keep the volume gentle and use a sleep timer so audio fades out. Entrainment is a wellness tool, not a medical treatment, and results vary. If you have epilepsy, a seizure disorder, or any medical concern, consult a healthcare professional first.
